Cory Turner Builds Momentum With Another Top-Five at Ohsweken

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (June 11, 2019) – Three weeks into the 2019 Ohsweken Speedway season, Cory Turner is quite pleased with the performance of his new Burger Barn/Ace 1 Construction/Mobil 1 No.13 ride. Driving for the Burger Barn Racing team, Turner rattled off a fifth-place finish last Friday night to make it two top-five finishes and a sixth-place result so far this year.
“I think we have podium capable cars, we’ve just started a bit further back for the Features,” Cory said. “There’s nothing you can do about that other than continue to get in a redraw spot and hope for a better draw.”
Last Friday, after mechanical troubles in Hot Laps, Turner was able to have a strong heat race where he earned a second-place finish and a spot in the redraw for the main event.
“In the heat race it was crazy slick and I don’t think I got over half throttle the whole time,” Cory explained. “The car was good though. We started third, got to second quickly and we were running down Mitch Brown for the lead. We had probably the second or third-fastest time overall in the heat race, so I was pretty happy with that.”
Come Feature time, Turner lined-up fifth for the main event. He fell back as far as seventh before finding his groove in the second half of the race. He raced as far forward as fourth before Jim Huppunen got past him with two laps to go.
“We were pretty decent in the Feature,” Turner said. “I was really good in the middle of the race. I was running down the guys in front of me. I got by Mitch Brown, I got by my brother and then Jimmy Huppunen got by me. I got back by him and then he got by me again with two laps to go.”
“There’s some guys you see a lot of some years, and I’ve seen a lot of Jimmy so far this year,” laughed Turner.
Overall, Turner has been largely satisfied with his car this year, but is far from complacent. He admits the transition to his new team along with a new chassis and motor combination is ongoing, but feels as though the group is trending in the right direction.
“The car is really free. It will turn in the corner nice, but I don’t have the same side bite as some other guys so far,” Turner explained. “I think our car is working well. We’ve made some changes for this week and I think we’re going to be better. We just have to keep working at it. We’re trying to fine tune it.”
The challenge, Turner says, is to make incremental changes and not overreact to any one race night or a certain set of track conditions.
“We don’t want to go chasing too far and dial ourselves out of the mix, “Turner said. “We’re consistently a top-five car, but we also want to consistently be a podium car. We’re there, we just need to be a little better.”
Turner will be back in action at Ohsweken for Wall of Fame night on Friday, June 14. Then, he plans to travel east to Brighton Speedway on Saturday, June 15 to begin the 2019 season with the Southern Ontario Sprints.
“We’re eager to defend the SOS Championship,” Turner said. “We’ll be at Brighton Saturday as long as all goes well Friday. We’re definitely trending upward. We’re consistently a top-five car and we just need to find a little more speed to get us on the podium every week.”
Race time at Ohsweken Speedway is 7:30pm on June 14 while the green flag drops at 7:00pm on June 15 at Brigghton Speedway. For additional event information, visit www.OhswekenSpeedway.ca and www.BrightonSpeedway.ca.
