Cory Turner Wraps-Up June With Top-Five Tally at Ohsweken

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (July 3, 2019) – Cory Turner brought a successful month of June to a close with another top-five finish in a rain-shortened 360 Sprint Car feature event at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, June 28. Turner battled some handling issues on his Burger Barn/Ace 1 Construction/Mobil 1-sponsored No.13 in his heat race before driving from the 11th starting position to a fourth-place finish in just 14 laps.
To start the night in heat race action, Turner drove from sixth to a fourth-place finish despite the handling issue that prevented the car from reaching its full potential. The end result was Turner sitting 11th in passing points and earning the same starting spot for the feature.
“It was a little twitchy,” Turner said of the car. “It was my own fault because we had some stuff not quite right on the car. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t where it needs to be to drive from a third-row starting spot into the redraw. It was the first redraw we’ve missed this year, which is a strong testament to our team.”
In the main event, Turner and his Burger Barn Racing team solved the issue and were among the fastest cars on the track. The race ended during a caution on lap 14 when rain forced an early end to the event. Turner had worked his way up to fourth by that time when his car seemed to be at its best for the night. The final restart with six laps to go likely would have proved advantageous for the Caistor Centre native.
“In the Feature, we had an awesome car,” Turner said. “I think we had a car capable of a podium. We were running Kreutter down before the last caution. I never got to see how good Jimmy, Mack or Dylan were since we started a few rows behind them. We definitely had a podium-capable car and if you run on the podium night-in and night-out, you’re going to have good results.”
Turner is currently in the top-five in the championship standings both in weekly competition at Ohsweken after six races and with the Southern Ontario Sprints after a pair of events. Although Turner does pay attention to the standings, he doesn’t let it impact his preparation.
“We pay attention to it, but you can’t let it affect your nightly decisions,” Turner explained. “At Ohsweken right now, we’re 15 points back, but we’re in fourth. We’re right on the leaders and we’ve had a couple of things not go our way the last couple of weeks. If we catch some good breaks, get in the redraw and start up front, we’ll control our own destiny. If we finish on the podium the rest of the year, we have a real good shot at winning a championship.”
Continued Turner: “It’s the same with the SOS. I didn’t run really well at Merrittville because we had the same problem that we had Friday. We’re back to third in the points, but we’re only 24 points back with six races to go, so it’s anybody’s game.”
With the calendar turning to July, Turner is happy with the progress he has made behind the wheel of his new ride and the improvement his entire team has shown over the first two months of the campaign.
“We’ve been happy with our progress,” Turner said. “We’ve had a real good first third of the year with two wins and a lot of top-fives. We just have to keep at it, keep working hard and keep prepping our stuff the way we know we can.”
Cory Turner will return to action with a planned doubleheader weekend to start July. The team will be at Ohsweken on Friday, July 5 before heading east to Brighton Speedway on Saturday, July 6 for the third round of action on the 2019 Southern Ontario Sprints tour.
